Derrick Schmidt is a self-taught painter and makes sculptures based in Kansas City, MO. Raised in a blue-collar environment. Coming to art in his late teens through his years of skateboarding.
Drawing from European and American histories, Derrick creates works that blur the line between sculpture and painting. Embedding mirror shards in an enamel and sand mixture while also experimenting with printed imagery and other materials to create a new surface or way of seeing. The work explores self-reflection, participation, and the relationship between meaning and material.
